The Australian Curriculum: Science, is organised around three interrelated strands:

  • Science Understanding
  • Science Inquiry Skills
  • Science as a Human Endeavour

Learning science engages students in meaningful ways and prepares students to use science for life and active citizenship so that they can function effectively in a scientifically and technologically advanced society. The study of Science provides a foundation for specific learning pathways leading to senior secondary science as well as science and engineering courses at university and technical and vocational education and training.

Science Competition

We encourage students in Prep to participate with an age appropriate project that is supported by their family. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to apply their Science knowledge and celebrate their learning in Science.

Our school has won the champion primary school award for the past nine years at the Gold Coast schools competition and in 2019 was awarded "Best Science School, QLD" at the STAQ awards at the University of Queensland.

Attached is information for the five categories that students can choose from to complete a project.

  1. A Scientific Investigation: To design and perform a scientific investigation and report on the results obtained and the conclusions reached.
  2. Communicating Science: To explain and communicate information about a scientific concept to a specified audience.
  3. A Classified Collection: To compile and present a classified collection to show relationships between items in the collection, or to assist in their recognition.
  4. An Environmental Action Plan: To identify, research, investigate and present recommendations about a local environmental issue.
  5. An Engineering and Technology project: To create a device or product to demonstrate a scientific principle, solve a problem or offer a different approach to a problem.

Also attached is information to explain the use and set up of "The Scientific Notebook" which needs to accompany each entry.
